Car Insurance Quote Checklist
When completing a quote online you will need to answer various questions. To assist you in this process we have provided a useful checklist detailing the information you will need to have available in order to obtain a quote or buy a policy online. The Insurance company is likely to need information about:
Details of your vehicle.All the details you will need can be found on your vehicle registration document.
- Your vehicle registration certificate may also be required by some insurers;
- Vehicle make, model and year of manufacture;
- Full address of where the vehicle is kept over night (if different from the home address);
- Estimated annual mileage;
- Estimated vehicle value;
- Have you modified the car? There is a chance if the car is modified that you will have difficulty finding an insurer, because this can make the car more susceptible to theft.
Details of any alarm or immobiliser.Make and model of any security alarm (unless factory fitted as standard). This may be found on a separate Installation Certificate or in your vehicle log book.
Details of all drivers and their histories.You will need your driving licence and the licences of any named drivers to give information about Accidents, convictions, claims or disabilities. Your driving history (including traffic offences by you or other nominated drivers) are important factors in the insurer's decision to either accept or reject your application for a policy.
- Name, date of birth and occupations of all drivers
- Details and approximate dates of driving convictions in the last 5 years for all drivers
- Details and approximate dates of motor claims in the last 3 years for all drivers
- Details of your No Claims Bonus (NCB) - How many years No Claims Discount you have
- Details of who will be the regular driver. Be careful, if you intend to insure the car in an olders persons name, when the regular driver is young (ie son or daughter). If the insurer asks you, it would be prudent to include all drivers (including young people), otherwise your insurance may be worthless.
Full disclosure essential. If someone is helping you complete the application form, they may say you don't have to write down every offence. This isn't true. You need to question questions fully and accurately as possible. If you do not if you ever need to make a claim on your insurance, there is a good chance it will be denied.
Questions to ask
Following are some key questions to ask your insurance provider BEFORE you purchase your automobile insurance
-
- What coverages does the law require me to purchase?
- Can you give me an example of a loss that would be paid under each coverage?
- What would each one cover, and which should I consider?
- Is it possible to buy "new for old" coverage on my vehicle and, if not, why not?
- Should I purchase coverage for a rental car if my car is out of use because of an insurance loss?
- Is there also coverage available to protect such a rental car from damage to it that might be my responsibility?
- As my insurance professional advisor, what coverages and limits would you recommend that I carry?
The preceding questions are intended as a guideline only, and are not meant to be exhaustive.
